MEXICO, Mexico City, gold cob 2 escudos, Philip V, assayer J, box-end cross (1705-10), very rare, NGC MS 62 (1715 Fleet Shipwreck Label). S-M30; KM-unl (cf 53.1); Cal-Type 238; Fr-7b. 6.74 grams. Broad, oval flan with nearly full and well-centered shield (rare thus), (oX)MJ to left and denomination II (reading vertically) to right, nearly full cross (slightly doubled), rich gold color with muted luster. While this design and assayer could date to as early as 1705, the only dates encountered so far are 1708 and 1710, and we have only ever offered one other example (also undated). From the 1715 Fleet, with Sedwick photo-certificate.
