MEXICO, Mexico City, gold cob 1 escudo, 1701 (L), posthumous Charles II, extremely rare, NGC MS 62 (1715 Fleet Shipwreck Label), finest and only example in NGC census. S-M29; Cal-833; KM-50 (as 1/0); Fr-5. 3.29 grams. Choice grade, rich gold color with hint of red toning and luster, but struck a bit off-center, resulting in a 100% full crown (rarely seen thus) with full final 1 and curved right side of 0 of date, nearly full cross, typically flat peripheries. We can locate only two other examples in our records, both of which are impounded in permanent collections (State of Florida and Banco de Mexico). From the 1715 Fleet.
