MEXICO, Mexico City, gold bust 2 escudos, Philip V, 1743 MF, extremely rare, PCGS AU58, finest and only example in PCGS census, ex-Rudman. Cal-1909; KM-124; Fr-10. Brilliant luster, bright yellow color, bold and well-centered strike with full rims, slight weakness on wig and minor hairlines in obverse fields, to date the only graded example at either PCGS or NGC, the only other example we can find in the auction record being an ex-jewelry VF+, significantly missing in all the big collections of our time like Norweb, Eliasberg, and Caballero de las Yndias, on par with the previous three lots in terms of rarity but of course not the iconic first date of issue. Note, by the way, that the present coin was previously certified as 1743/2 by NGC, but PCGS did not see any evidence of that unlisted overdate, and neither do we. Pedigreed to the Isaac Rudman Collection (Heritage Auction of August 2015, lot 31034, as 1743/2).
