MEXICO, Mexico City, gold bust 1 escudo, Philip V, 1732 F, extremely rare, NGC MS 61, "top pop," ex-1733 Fleet, ex-Rudman. Cal-1744; KM-113; Fr-11. Rather choice strike, well centered on a broad flan, its fields resplendent with luster despite annular friction marks on obverse that appear to be the only reason this coin is not graded higher, also with die crack before ET that could be from the strength of strike, nonetheless decidedly the finest known of about six extant, the others being: one permanently impounded in the Banco de Mexico collection and one sold by Ponterio in March 1992, both F-VF; one holed and one damaged, sold in Sedwick Auctions 23 and 36, respectively; and another MS 61 in the NGC census that is visually less appealing. The extreme rarity of this jewel is further enhanced by its shipwreck origin, here presented with the above two lots as an opportunity to assemble a denomination set of the first machine-made gold coins from the Americas. Pedigreed to the Rudman Collection.
