MEXICO, Mexico City, cob 8 reales, Charles II, assayer not visible, profile bird shape with hole for eye, ex-Hudson, Practical Book of Cobs Plate. KM-46; Cal-Type 108. 27.46 grams. An exceptional character cob, instantly memorable for its naturally formed bird/parrot profile, with a pronounced curved beak and erect tail, full weight and not cut down or otherwise modified later except for the addition of an astutely located piercing for an eye. Previous holes, later plugged, are in the tail (with repaired break) and feet. Clear oM mintmark to left of nearly full shield, about half of the cross, Fine with areas of flatness and attractive light toning. A highly unusual, easily recognizable, and obviously unique “presentation piece” with important pedigree, and one of the most distinctively shaped cobs in the present collection. With collector tag M-S4-21 (“Pirate’s Parrot”). Plate Coin on page 69 of The Practical Book of Cobs (4th edition, 2007), pedigreed to Sedwick Auction 6, with original lot-tag 703, and with Sedwick photo-certificate, privately acquired from Louis Hudson in 2005.
