MEXICO, Mexico City, cob 8 reales, 1721 J, reverse struck from Royal (galano) die, unique. S-M22; KM-unl (47 for Type); Cal-unl (Type 170). 22.83 grams. Odd-shaped flan with most of shield and clear final digit I of date above mintmark oM, full cross with enhancements per the Royal (galano) dies of 1715-32, somewhat dark and with some surface corrosion (also with lacuna in edge) but exciting and important to Mexican cob specialists. Note: The original certification was done prior to conservation, which revealed both the correct date (1721 as opposed to 1720) and the Royal reverse. With tag and Sedwick certificate from 1997 and post-conservation photo-certificates. Recovered from: Akerendam, sunk in 1725 off Norway
