MEXICO, Mexico City, cob 8 reales, (1714-15) J, new-style shield and cross, "thumbprint" on cross, ex-Goodpaster. S-M22; KM-47; Cal-Type 170. 26.05 grams. Large flan with good full cross whose uncorroded state reveals a central swirling pattern from one particular die that was improperly polished (see pp. 94-97 of Spanish Colonial Silver Coins in the Florida Collection, by Alan Craig [2000]), bold but off-center and lightly corroded obverse details (full shield and oMJ), toned in crevices. Pedigreed to the estate of Karl H. Goodpaster (Real Eight conservator), with original Real Eight Co. certificate, and pedigreed to Sedwick Auction 7, with original lot-tag 501. Recovered from: Spanish 1715 Fleet, sunk off the east coast of Florida
