MEXICO, Mexico City, 4 reales, Charles-Joanna, "Late Series," assayer L to left, mintmark M to right (L-M), with Guatemala sun-over-mountains countermark (Type II, 1839) on pillars side, ex-Sedwick-Downing. Nesmith-86 for type; S-M9; Cal-135; KM-18. 13.05 grams. Very worn host (AVG) struck on a full flan with legends and interiors soft though visible, hairline edge-crack and perfectly circular hole at 2 o’clock, the XF countermark (possibly counterfeit) full and deeply impressed (with characteristic disturbance on opposite side of the coin), punched multiple times and likely rotated between punches, accompanied by an NGC tag that says "questionable c/s." Pedigreed to the Sedwick-Downing Collection of Mexican Charles-Joanna Coinage.
