MEXICO, Mexico City, 4 reales, Charles-Joanna, "Early Series," assayer R (Latin) at bottom between pillars, motto as PLVS in rounded panel, NGC AU details / saltwater damage (Shipwreck Blue Label). Nesmith-6 for type/6a; Cal-115; S-M1; KM-16. 12.91 grams. Choice example of the last of the rounded-panel coins to be struck before the change to a rhomboid panel (which was adopted by later assayers as well), with steel-gray toning, struck on a broad flan, some doubling on shield side rendering queen's name as IOOHAN, full legends and interiors in Latin lettering (including the common but strange use of a retrograde N), a small wedge of metal missing on edge. Recovered from: “Golden Fleece wreck,” sunk ca. 1550 in the northern Caribbean
