MEXICO, Mexico City, 4 reales, Charles-Joanna, "Early Series," assayer P to right, mintmark M to left (oMo-oPo), motto as PLVS in left-leaning rhomboid panel with one lozenge on each side, very rare, NGC XF 45. Nesmith-26 for type; Cal-123; S-M4; KM-17. Struck on a broad flan with choice full legends and inner details, attractively toned with slightly lighter high points, a very rare variety with lozenges instead of annulets in the rhomboid panel (only four known in 4 reales and this the finest example), HISPANIARVM in legend, a later emission from this assayer. The use of lozenges or mascles (hollow lozenges) carried over from assayer P to assayers F and G, but neither of those later assayers replaced the annulets in the rhomboid panel with lozenges.
