MEXICO, Mexico City, 4 reales, Charles-Joanna, "Early Series," assayer P to right, mintmark M to left (oMo-oPo), motto as PLVS in left-leaning rhomboid panel with two annulets in each side, denomination 4 over rotated 4, very rare, NGC AU 53. Nesmith-26c type; Cal-123; S-M4; KM-17. 13.37 grams. Strong strike on a complete planchet, with full legends and interior details, two different types of flowers or quatrefoils (one type on obverse and another type on reverse and only found on coins from this assayer), one of only six known with a rotated denomination "4" that was originally punched in the die at a 90-degree tilt and then corrected (and only seen in this denomination and variety), later HISPANIARVM type, lightly toned with beautiful iridescence over muted luster, finest example known for this variety (not specified on label). In all, this coin represents a combination of rarity and high grade; for comparison, see lot 522 in Sedwick Auction 38, in XF45 grade, which sold for $20,000 plus buyer's premium.
