MEXICO, Mexico City, 4 reales, Charles-Joanna, "Early Series," assayer P at bottom between pillars, very rare, NGC XF 40, ex-"Golden Fleece Wreck" (ca. 1550) Research Collection. Nesmith-6d type; Cal-118; S-M4; KM-17. 13.1 grams. An impressive example of its kind with handsome deep gray toning, full legends and well struck interiors, minor edge crack. One of seven known of this type with the assayer letter P punched over an erased R beneath a rhomboid panel (that type of panel became the norm on coins struck under the three assayers after R) and a die match to the last coins struck under assayer R's tenure, thus providing a nice link between assayers. NGC label does not reflect the over-assayer nor the connection to the "Golden Fleece Wreck" (ca. 1550). Pedigreed to the "Golden Fleece Wreck" (ca. 1550) Research Collection (Sedwick Auction 4, lot 184).
