MEXICO, Mexico City, 4 reales, Charles-Joanna, "Early Series," assayer Latin R (Rincón) at bottom between pillars, motto as PLVSV within rounded banner, rare, NGC XF details / edge filing. Nesmith-6 for type/6c type; Cal-115; S-M1; KM16. Among the earliest emissions of 4 reales for this first assayer of the Mexico City mint, the coin slightly doubled but with full legends and interiors (the broad flan extending past borders in places), rich chocolate toning. By the time 4 reales were minted, most Gothic lettering had been replaced by Latin lettering, with a few exceptions, such as the M mintmark on either side of the shield. The retrograde N was commonly used (in IOhANA) and note that the lions inside the shield bear crowns and tongues. The banner read PLVSV(T) although the T was very often obscured by the right pillar.

Cori Sedwick Downing special comments: When I sold my collection in November 2025 in Sedwick Auction 38, I was overwhelmed by the popularity of my Early Series coins and gratified that others appreciated their beauty, rarity, and special place in early Spanish colonial history as much as I did. It is my great pleasure to continue to write about Early Series coinage and catalog as many as I can. One caveat I developed from my collection is about grading: Buy the rarity of the coin, not the grade, because some coins with lower grades are the most beautiful (and rarest) of all. It is important to realize that grading guidelines change over time; it is not a static judgment. As a collector, if you make this your guiding principle, you will be richly rewarded.
