MEXICO, Mexico City, 4 reales, Charles-Joanna, "Early Series," assayer Latin R (Rincón) at bottom between pillars, oval panel with PLVS, NGC XF 40, ex-Sedwick-Downing, Nesmith Plate Coin (both stated on label). Nesmith-6a; S-M1; Cal-115; KM-16. 13.05 grams. Very light rainbow toning (low contrast), with minor hairline edge-crack on pillars side only, full legends (except for part of shield side) with curious OO doubling for IOHANA, full inner details, important pedigree. Plate Coin 6a in Nesmith's Coinage of the First Mint of the Americas at Mexico City, 1536-1572 (1955) and pedigreed to the Sedwick-Downing Collection of Mexican Charles-Joanna Coinage.
