MEXICO, Mexico City, 4 reales, Charles-Joanna, "Early Series," assayer G at bottom between pillars, mintmark oMo-oMo, motto as PLVS in left-leaning rhomboid panel with one dot in each side, very rare, NGC AU 58, "top pop." Nesmith-11 for type; Cal-119; S-M2; KM-17. 13.6 grams. Struck on a typically broad flan with full, well-struck legends and inner details (pillars side slightly off-center), lightly toned, exceptional grade for the series, particularly rare with dots instead of annulets inside the rhomboid panel (two known and only for this assayer). The last of the Early Series emissions, this example is tied with two others for finest known in the NGC census, so its rarity and grade cannot be overstated.
