MEXICO, Mexico City, 4 reales, Charles-Joanna, "Early Series," Assayer F to right, mintmark M to left (oMo-oFo, plain annulets), motto as PLVS in left-leaning rhomboid panel with single annulets on either side, extremely rare. Nesmith-16 type; Cal-120; S-M3; KM-unl. 11.99 grams. Broad flan, full AU details and areas of luster despite some light to moderate surface corrosion, lightly toned, and clear assayer, the rarest of the whole series with less than ten known in all varieties. This is the die variety Kent Ponterio used for a die study to determine the order of early assayers as seen in Ponterio Auction 150 (August 2009), page 146. Its importance to an Early Series collector cannot be overstated.
