MEXICO, Mexico City, 2 reales, Charles-Joanna, "Late Series," assayer S to right, mintmark M to left (M-S), very rare, ex-Sedwick-Downing. Nesmith-77 type; S-M8; Cal-95; KM-unl (12 for type). 5.37 grams. From the rarest of the "Late Series" assayers, with only six known of this type (M-S), mostly shipwreck coins like this one, which shows sharp AU details (full legends and interiors) despite dark toning and thinning from corrosion all over. Coins from this assayer rarely come up for sale; Nesmith had only seen one 2 reales from this assayer and it was an oM-S, which is much less rare. Pedigreed to the Sedwick-Downing Collection of Mexican Charles-Joanna Coinage.
