MEXICO, Mexico City, 1 real, Charles-Joanna, "Early Series," assayer P to right, mintmark M to left (oMo-oPo, plain annulets), motto as PLVS in right-leaning rhomboid panel with single annulets on either side, HISPANIARVM variety, rare, NGC F 15, ex-Sedwick-Downing, ex-Hubbard (both stated on label), ex-Laguette, Nesmith Plate Coin. Nesmith-24c; S-M4; Cal-63; KM-unlisted (7 for type). 3.18 grams. This little gem with desirable pedigree has lovely toning, despite some old scratches, with full legends and interiors. Note that the quatrefoils in the shield-side legend are less ornate than earlier emissions under this assayer. Pedigreed to the Lucio Laguette Collection and the Clyde Hubbard Collection (stated on label), with his tag, plated as a drawing on page 89 of Robert Nesmith's The Coinage of the First Mint of the Americas at Mexico City, 1536-1572 (1955), also pedigreed to the Sedwick-Downing Collection of Mexican Charles-Joanna Coinage.
