MEXICO, Guanajuato, cap-and-rays 8 reales, 1853 PF. KM-377.8; DP-Go37. 20.33 grams. Rare provenance to a British merchant steamship that was returning from New Orleans when it sank in thick fog off Ireland with hundreds of thousands of Mexican silver coins, only some of which have been recovered in modern times. Corroded surfaces with some dark encrustation on the obverse but with a clear date and assayer. Recovered from: S.S. Crescent City, sunk in 1871 off Ireland
