London, Great Britain, Bank of England, World War II Operation Bernhard counterfeit 10 pounds, 16-10-1935, block K / 156, serial 59272. Pick-336B; Schwan-Boling-182. A counterfeit note produced by Polish and Jewish prisoners held by the Nazis in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp during World War II. Prisoners produced notes in quantity and went so far as to handle and dirty them to simulate circulation. The estimated value of the notes produced ranges from 130 to 300 million pounds. The Nazis had hoped to use these notes to pay spies while also undermining the British economy. With thousands of unused notes on hand towards the end of the war, the Nazis dumped crates of the notes into lakes Toplitz and Grundlsee in Austria. Nice AU note with minor handling around the edges but no folds going into the interior of the note, a few pinholes, small notch along right side (as made) to mark the denomination.
