Lima, Peru, high-relief silver medal, 1864, Congress of South American Republics. Fonrobert-9137. 34 mm; 24.73 grams. Standing native with various symbols in center above engraver initials R.B. (R. Britten) within legend E. U. DE COLOMBIA * BOLIVIA * E. U. DE VENEZUELA * CHILE * PERU * ECUADOR * R. ARGENTIA on obverse, reverse with sunburst above names AROSEMENA / BENAVENTE / GUZMAN / MONTT / PAZ-SOLDAN / PIEDRAHITA / SARMIENTO within wreath of palm (left) and laurel (right) branches inside legend CONGRESO AMERICANO . INSTALADO EN LIMA EL DIA 28 DE OCTUBRE DE 1864 +, with engraver initials R.B. again at bottom. This elegant medal was created to commemorate the fourth Latin American Conference in November of 1864 in Lima, Peru, which had fruitlessly attempted to make agreements regarding intervention by (mostly) European powers. Beautifully toned AU with typical hairlines in fields from old polishing.
