Lima, Peru, cob 4 escudos, 1697/6H, rare, NGC MS 64, ex-1715 Fleet (designated on special label). S-L25; KM-unl (25 for type); Cal-927. 13.41 grams. Excellent full inner details (pillars-and-waves and cross-lions-castles) with bold full crown and much legend (including king's name and ordinal C.II) on a broad flan, light toning and luster, tied with one other for finest known in NGC census. The sharp details on this coin demonstrate that the overdate is actually 697/666 (see State of Florida collection coin #1264 for another clear example), using one of three known dies for the first year 1696, all the 1697's being overdates, according to die-study by Phil Flemming. NGC #4762817-003. From the 1715 Fleet, pedigreed to the Ponterio auction of April 2003, with original lot-tag #363.
