Lead papal bulla (seal), Pope Leo X (1513-1521), with original silk cord attached. 52.43 grams total. 40 mm. Pope Leo X was born Giovanni di Lorenzo de' Medici (1475-1521), son of Lorenzo the Magnificent. Crowned on March 19, 1513, Leo X was the last non-priest to be elected pope. Martin Luther was excommunicated by Leo and then condemned by Emperor Charles V (who was also King of Spain). The bulla shows saints Peter (right) and Paul (left) on one side with inscription LEO / PAPA / X on the other side, its original gold/red silk cord still attached. Pedigreed to the Aureo auction of May 2005 (lot 655).
