Large silver Atocha bar #27 from Potosi(?), 78 lb 10.56 oz troy, Class Factor 0.5, no visible markings, ex-Atocha (1622). 13" x 5" x 3/12". While most collectors would appreciate studying and displaying markings, savvy Atocha enthusiasts should recognize the rarity of this bar as being DEVOID of any markings, in fact without a lot of evidence of corrosion either. Was it intentionally made without markings (hence contraband, although there is a small depression in the center that might have been a double-scoop assayer's "bite" from the Potosi mine)? Or was it simply some sea turtle's favorite scratching post for its long life under the sea? At the end of the day, the bar at least has value for being genuine Atocha silver, which was a hot thing for replica jewelry back in the 1990s and whose time might be here again. From the Atocha (1622), with original Fisher photo-certificate #85A-S27.
