Large piece of coal with coral encrustation. 521 grams; approx. 6-1/2" x 5" x 2". This unassuming chunk of glossy lightweight coal with substantial coral encrustation (contrastingly white) is a bit of a mystery, as it is a type of fuel for later ships yet was found UNDER the main pile of the San Jose, so perhaps it was simply for cooking onboard the Spanish ship. With photo-certificate #S-7.15.89.5 from the salvager, whose find is mentioned in his book Following the Lure of the Galleon Treasures, a signed and numbered copy of which accompanies this lot.
