Large, copperplate Dutch map of Peru by Jan Jansson (1640). 19" x 16", the actual image 14" x 11-1/2". Believed to be an early impression due to the fact that the compass rose needle points east instead of north (corrected in later printings), which is confusing since the map is oriented with north to left. Shown on the map are hundreds of place names (towns, islands, mountains, rivers, etc.) in coastal Peru (including parts of Bolivia and Ecuador), with curious cartouche at top left showing natives and fanciful animals, and scale at bottom right with flags, cannon, cherub, mermaid and Triton, all in good condition with strong, dark impression.
