Large conglomerate of eleven tin matchboxes with hundreds of wooden matches, ex-Avalanche (1877), ex-Peter Liddy. 2500 grams total. roughly 10" x 6" x 6". From a New Zealand-bound shipwreck that sank in a matter of minutes after colliding with another ship, drowning all 59 passengers and almost all of the crew, a stable but fragile orangish conglomerate of embossed matchboxes, wooden matches, and thick encrustation, impressive and fascinating. not to mention the rarity of the shipwreck itself (first object we have ever seen or heard of from this wreck). From the Avalanche, sunk in 1877 off Dorset, southeast England, pedigreed to the Peter Liddy Collection, with an article about it by Peter Liddy in Australia Gem & Treasure magazine (ca. 1999).
