Large blue-on-white Chinese porcelain lidded jar with four small handles, ex-"Vung Tao Wreck" (ca. 1690). 4.14 lb. 9" tall, 8" at shoulders. Substantial porcelain piece painted in blue with sparse design of flowers and flowering bushes around the sides, smooth flat bottom (like a large cookie jar), four little ceramic loops at shoulders, the lid not an exact match but rare as intact, sea worn appearance with most of glaze worn away. These wares were made in various locations in Vietnam and intended for a European market, from a ship bound from China to Jakarta where the porcelain would have been purchased by the Dutch East India Company for transshipment to Holland. From the "Vung Tao Wreck," sunk ca. 1690 off Vietnam.
