Large and intact silver candlestick holder and hollow round base, marked with crown-in-beaded-circle tax stamp, ex-Atocha (1622), ex-Christie's. 517 grams. 10" tall, 7" in diameter. Impressively large and heavy silver candlestick holder, fully intact apart from minor splits, chips, and dents, consisting of a 7" long stem of graduated ring design screwed into a broad, tall, hollow circular base. The underside rim bears a faint but distinctive mark of a crown within a beaded circle. Surfaces are exceptionally well preserved for an artifact of this type, with minimal corrosion and attractive light toning throughout.

The crown mark is particularly significant, as it closely matches tax marks found on 1649-52 Potosí cob 8 reales recovered from the Capitana (1654). A comparable crown mark is attributed to Lima, Peru, by Cristina Esteras Martín in Marcas de Platería Hispanoamericana, Siglos XVI-XX (1992). No doubt it was the mark of a Peruvian Caja Real (Royal Treasury Office) to show that tax had been paid or, in the case of the coins, that the silver was approved for re-circulation.

While the original certificate is no longer present, this piece retains its Treasure Salvors inventory numbers 696 and 2061. A substantial and important silver artifact with an exceptional old auction pedigree. From the Atocha (1622), pedigreed to the original Christie's Atocha auction of June 1988 (lot 66), with photocopies from catalog and printout from Fisher database, also pedigreed to Sedwick Auction 15 (lot 1526) and Auction 7 (lot 1859).
