JAPAN, 1 yen, Emperor Meiji (1852-1912), 1895 (Meiji 28), PCGS MS63. KM-YA25.3; Dav-247; JNDA-1-10A; J&V-Q-23. 26.92 grams. 38.1 mm. Choice Mint State with full details in dragon and legends, frosty luster under light rainbow toning. The Meiji 1 yen was Japan’s main trade dollar of the late 19th century, struck to compete with the Mexican peso and accepted across East Asia. The 1895 issue, contemporary with Japan’s victory in the First Sino-Japanese War, is scarce in Mint State and quite desirable at this grade level.
