Impressive gold chain, 277 links, 91.2 grams, 21K, ex-Santa Margarita (1622). 37¾" long (without the custom clasp). An imposing but useful length of original chain consisting of solid, smooth, round links in high-grade gold, much heavier than it looks, in fact identical in design but even longer than a chain from the same wreck that sold in the 1988 Christie's auction, the unstated purpose of such chains (besides adornment) being a way to avoid heavy taxation on gold in colonial times. Excellent condition, a rare opportunity to own a certified and wearable piece of genuine 1622-Fleet gold treasure. (XRF tested at 21K gold.) NOTE: This chain comes with a custom-made (extra 2.46-gram) gold clasp for wearing. Featured on back cover of printed catalog. From the Santa Margarita (1622), with original Fisher photo-certificate and plastic tag 07M-83756.
