ISLAMIC KINGDOMS, Merinids, al-Maghreb (North Africa), AV dobla (dinar), Abu Ya'qub Yusuf, struck 685-706 AH (1286-1306 AD), NGC MS 62. Album-524; Hazard-725. 4.64 grams. Almost completely round, beautifully detailed, with one tiny nick in rim, choice grade overall. The Merinids were a Berber Muslim dynasty that controlled present-day Morocco from the mid-13th to the 15th century AD and intermittently controlled other parts of North Africa and the southern Iberian Peninsula around Gibraltar. It is no surprise this coinage resembles the contemporary dinars of Al-Andalus.
