INDIA (British), Madras Presidency, massive 12-lb clump of approx. 450 (+/-) copper X cash treasure coins, 1808, ex-Barfield. KM-319. 12 lb total. Roughly 10" x 7" x 5-½". A truly impressive and massive shipwreck clump, an extraordinary visual specimen with numerous East India Company X cash coins exposed across its surfaces. Many coins are darkened from long submersion, yet dates and principal design elements remain clearly visible. Even allowing a generous estimate of half coins and half encrusted matrix and debris, the piece likely contains approximately 450 coins (+/-). The characteristic rusty orange matrix also preserves fragments of the wooden cask in which the coins were originally stored, along with visible remains of glass and other associated artifact fragments. Notably, a large void on the side shows where a cannonball from the ship once rested. Professionally conserved, revealing clear details across many of the coins as well as the surrounding shipwreck materials. An imposing and highly desirable trophy specimen from this famous wreck. Pedigreed to the Barfield Collection, with photo-certificate. Recovered from: Admiral Gardner, sunk in 1809 southeast of England
