Guatemala, gold bust 1 escudo, Charles III, 1778 P, extremely rare, NGC XF 40, finest and only example in NGC census. JP-1E29; KM-37; Cal-1321; Fr-13. Guatemalan colonial gold is all very rare and highly sought, struck only in certain years and in very low quantities. For this specific type (Charles III standard-bust 1 escudo), the only dates are 1778, 1781, 1783 and 1785, all extremely rare with no more than three or four examples known of each. To acquire an NGC-finest of any date of the type is an almost once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Slightly off-center obverse but well-centered reverse, a few light hairlines on bust but overall choice.
