Guatemala, Banco Colombiano, 20 pesos, 25-9-1901, series IVa, serial 9359, black serial numbers, printed signatures, PMG Fine 12, finest and only example in PMG census. SCWPM-S124b. The Banco Colombiano (represented in this lot along with the following two lots) was established in 1878 by Colombian investors to support Guatemalan coffee producers. This finely designed series of bank notes was made by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co. A vignette of an armored ancient figure stands at left holding a Phrygian cap atop a pole while the central vignette of a coffee plantation is flanked by the arms of Guatemala and Colombia, symbolizing the bank's connection between the two countries; the underprint is pale orange. Good ink colors and paper color despite a good deal of circulation with a 5/8" split at the top center, a few small internal splits, and light soiling. Very rare in any condition given heavy circulation as well as redemption of the higher denomination in the series. PMG #8067687-008.
