Guatemala, 8 reales, sun-over-mountains countermark (Type II, 1839) on cross side of a contemporary counterfeit Potosi, Bolivia, cob 8 reales Royal (galano), 1683 V, NGC VF details / holed, c/s XF weak. KM-96.1. 24.8 grams. Broad-flan host with cracks to edge from the crude but very deep countermark, holed to left of cross / near top of pillars, attractively toned, cross side appears to be a die-match with Lazaro 210 (rated R2) but Lazaro's pillars side is too doubled to confirm a match. Note: The host coin is actually a circulating contemporary counterfeit cast in the 1800s, prior to the countermarking in 1839 (several examples known with the genuine countermark in different places, for example in Guttag and Elizondo). It was apparently cast from a genuine example with the same cross-side die as Lazaro #210. All of the cast counterfeits have the same diagnostic doubling and misplacement of the T in POTOSI on the pillars side, also with hole in same location on all. Examples in Spanish auctions have been referred to as "Fundición indígena para circular en Centro América con resello." The NGC label does not specifically identify the host as a contemporary counterfeit.
