Green-glazed butter pot, ex-Empress of Ireland (1914). 98 grams. 2½" x 2". This wreck is known as "Canada's Titanic," as it was the worst peacetime maritime disaster in Canadian history. In the early hours of May 29, 1914, the fog-shrouded ship was struck midships on its starboard side by the Norwegian collier Storstad. The Empress of Ireland foundered and sank in 14 minutes, with only 465 passengers and crew saved among the 1,477 on board. This little piece, completely intact, bears dark green glazing on the exterior and bright white surfaces on the inside, two little fake handles on either side, with marking on base showing MEHUN above and FRANCE below a logo that says CP&CO for Charles Pillivuyt & Co., a French porcelain maker still in business today. From the Empress of Ireland (1914), with original certificate from the salvor (Bart P. Malone) dated December 2004.
