Great Britain, tin Admiral Vernon medal, 1740, Vernon's flagship / naval scene, extremely rare, ex-Adams (plate), ex-Finn. AC-PB1A. 19.87 grams; 40 mm. Bright and lustrous AU with slightly convex obverse (indicative of a "sophisticated shop," according to Adams and Chao) showing Vernon's flagship above the date 1740, which is a bit of a mystery since the reverse shows two ships firing on forts under the name PORTO BELLO (a battle that took place in 1739). One of the rarest medals (only three reported) and clearly different from the usual series both in execution and metallic content (XRF: 98.12% tin). Pedigreed to the John Adams Collection (with his handwritten tag), plated on page 46 of Medallic Portraits of Admiral Vernon (2010), by Adams and Chao, and to the Leonard Finn Collection.
