Great Britain, silver-washed copper alloy Admiral Vernon medal, 1739, Vernon and Fort Chagre / Porto Bello, ex-Adams (plate). AC-FCv6H. 13.66 grams; 37 mm. Very silvery in appearance but unfortunately not solid silver as Adams and Ponterio had thought, bold XF+ with nice toning around details (Vernon's portrait particularly bold), very photogenic (hence its selection as a plate piece in AC). XRF: 1.83% silver, 40.14% copper, 51.53% zinc, 5.49% lead. Pedigreed to the John Adams Collection (with his handwritten tag), plated on page 146 of Medallic Portraits of Admiral Vernon (2010), by Adams and Chao, and to Ponterio Auction 87 of April 1997 (an unnamed special collection of medals), with original lot-tag 226.
