Great Britain, silver Admiral Vernon medal, 1739, Vernon / Porto Bello, rare, ex-Adams, DNW cover piece. AC-PBv26V. 16.98 grams; 38 mm. Bright, lightly hairlined AU with light toning in crevices (dark spot below Vernon's elbow, the light ridges in obverse fields not damage but a characteristic of flan-casting known as chasing), very sharply struck (especially for silver) and rare like all silver examples but probably the most prevalent variety in that metal, a real showpiece for its quality of detail. XRF: 96.73% silver, 1.39% copper, 1.38% tin. Pedigreed to the John Adams Collection (with his handwritten tag) and plated on the cover of the Dix Noonan Webb auction catalog of June 2009 (lot 2037).
