Great Britain, proof gold medal, (1897), Sir Ralph Abercromby / centennial of the conquest of Trinidad in 1797, rare, NGC PF 63 Ultra Cameo. Eimer-1809b; BHM-3623. 39mm. Obverse with bust of Sir Ralph Abercromby facing to left inside legend SIR RALPH / ABERCROMBY; reverse with view of Port of Spain, Trinidad, with fort waving British flag and several ships, mountains in background, above three-line exergue MISCERIQUE PROBAT / POPULOS ET FOEDERA / JUNGI ("He approves both of the people intermingling and of the treaties being entered upon"), all within legend in frosted ring TO COMMEMORATE THE CENTENNIAL OF THE CONQUEST OF TRINIDAD BY THE BRITISH 1797. Brilliantly lustrous, with faint hairlines only, reportedly originally made and sold on the island in 1897. Sir Abercromby's capture of the islands of St. Lucia and Trinidad from the French resulted in British control of those islands, confirmed by the Peace of Amiens in 1802 and made permanent in 1814 (the island of Trinidad uniting with Tobago in 1889 and becoming independent in 1962).
