Gold and red-coral rosary, ex-1715 Fleet. 56.08 grams total. about 34" long. A most impressive religious jewel, complete with all coral and gold beads intact (a few retaining small barnacles), very similar to the specimen sold in our Auction 16 from the same beach find but with a higher count of coral beads, 53 in total, arranged in five “decades” around the neck and three down to the cross, together with five larger gold “paternoster” beads. The crucifix differs slightly, here 1¾" long and flat, surmounted with a separately cast figure of Christ, engraved with INRI at the top and skull and crossbones of Golgotha at the bottom, plain on the reverse, with integrated suspension loop. The coral beads show their natural red hue, long prized in rosaries and believed since antiquity to hold protective powers, its origin in Greek mythology attributed to the blood of Medusa. A highly desirable survivor from this famous wreck, remarkable for its completeness and beauty. From the 1715 Fleet, with photo-certificate and 2010 appraisal, pedigreed to Sedwick Auction 31, lot 1364.
