German copperplate engraving by Theodore de Bry showing a Portuguese shipwreck off Sao Vicente, Brazil, from America, 3rd book, 1st part (1592), hand colored. 12" x 7-3/4" (image 7-3/4" x 6-3/8"). Sad depiction of a shipwreck off the coast of Sao Vicente, Brazil (under the command of Hans Staden, a German explorer who later wrote about his capture by native Brazilians), with sailors foundering in the water (pieces of ship's wood floating around them) and survivors on shore fishing them out of the water, others with hands clasped in prayer juxtaposed against bucolic landscapes and fortifications. Old taped repairs to bottom of page and bottom left portion of engraving, otherwise a well-executed work.
