German copperplate engraving by Theodore de Bry showing Pizarro, Almagro and Luque with galleons in the background in Panama, plus on the reverse another engraving showing Hernando de Soto being sent by Pizarro to apprehend Atahualpa, from America, 6th book (1597), both hand colored. 12-1/2" x 8-3/4" (images 7-3/8" x 6-1/4"). First image, a workaday scene of men loading boats, soldiers taking directions, while Hernando de Luque (a priest acting as an agent for expedition's financial backer) blesses Francisco Pizarro and Diego de Almagro (Pizarro's close friend) as they embark on their conquest of Peru. Second image represents a scene from Pizarro's third expedition to South America, landing in Ecuador, where he was joined by Hernando de Soto, another conquistador. Marching inland toward present-day Peru, Pizarro sent de Soto, friar Vicente de Valverde and native interpreter Felipillo to meet Atahualpa at Cajamarca. This engraving illustrates the meeting between de Soto and Atahualpa. Both engravings are well executed and colored but paper is somewhat thin with some staining and foxing, as-made crease at bottom left and small pinhole at top left of first image, overall good condition.
