German copperplate engraving by Theodore de Bry showing Atahualpa delivering his ransom to Pizarro, from America, 6th book (1597), hand colored. 12-3/8" x 8-3/8" (image 7-3/4" x 6-1/2"). Just prior to the iconic de Bry scene of Atahualpa being strangled to death by Pizarro's men using a garotte, this engraving depicts the Inca king chained at his feet to a chair seemingly reasoning with a standing Francisco Pizarro in a stately room, with pink and white tiles on the floor. One wonders whether he knew his fate at that moment. Some foxing not affecting the image and several small pinholes.
