GUATEMALA, silver medal, dated 1871 (probably struck in the late 1880s), memorial to Justo Rufino Barrios, by Johann-Baptist Frener, very rare. Ruttley-FMG-4b. 20.17 grams. 38 mm. Obverse with bust inside legend AL HEROE DE 1871 / JUSTO RUFINO BARRIOS (signed by engraver under bust); reverse with FUNDADOR / DE LA / LIBERTAD / GUATEMALTECA / Y PROTOMARTIR / DE LA UNION / DE / CENTRO-AMERICA / LA PATRIA / RECONOCIDA; very lustrous AU+ with traces of light rainbow toning, minor marks only, slightly weak in center of reverse where some design can be seen from a possible under-strike. Ruttley calls this issue "exceptionally rare" and notes that Rufino was "one of two leaders of the Liberal Revolution of 1871," hence the date on the medal, which various experts speculate was struck as late as 1886-92.
