GUATEMALA, 2 reales "moclón," crown countermark (1662) on a Lima, Peru, cob 2 reales mule with 4R obverse, Philip II, assayer Diego de la Torre, *-4 to left, P-oD to right, unique, ex-Richard Stuart, ex-Ponte. Pérez Longo-Type B; KM-unl (cf B1.1). 6.00 grams. Nearly full but unevenly punched countermark (VF) on a well-detailed host (Fine) with toned fields, sediment in crevices and inside a small edge-crack, the obverse design clearly from a 4R die but the reverse 2R-sized (also a 2R-sized flan, about half the thickness of a 4R, possibly also lightly shaved on the edge long ago), a typical muling seen on Lima gold cobs of the 1750s but in this case unique for its type and also the only known example of a 4R-design moclón, probably qualified for countermarking in its time simply by weight without considering its design details. Pedigreed to the Richard Stuart Collection and to the Luis R. Ponte Collection.
