GREAT BRITAIN, large silver medal, 1687, James II / salvage of the Concepción by William Phips, by G. Bower, ex-Brand, housed in custom plastic holder printed with information. Betts-67; Eimer-285; MI-619/33. 55 mm. Obverse with conjoined busts of king and queen within legend • IACOBVS • II • ET • MARIA • D • G • MAG • BRI • FRAN • ET • HIB • REX • ET • REGINA •; reverse with • SEMPER TIBI PENDEAT HAMUS • encircling the scene of a sailing ship at sea behind rowboat with men search for treasure from the wreck, NAVFRAGA REPERTA / 1687 in exergue. A famous and important medal, both for British medal collectors (who refer to it as the "Recovery of Treasure at St. Domingo" medal) and American historians, but also for the growing legions of shipwreck enthusiasts, as this piece was commissioned in commemoration for the salvage of the Spanish ship Concepción (sunk in 1641 off Hispaniola) by New Englander Sir William Phips using silver actually recovered from the wreck. This pedigreed example is nicely rainbow toned with minor marks and only light wear (AU), minor rim-bumps but also an edge-flaw near the bottom. Pedigreed to the Brand Collection.
