GREAT BRITAIN (American Chamber of Commerce in Liverpool), large gold-plated copper medal, 1866, Atlantic Telegraph Cable, awarded to Chief Engineer Samuel Canning, by J.S. and A.B. Wyon, very rare. 206.8 grams. 76 mm. Obverse: shields of Great Britain and of the United States, superimposed upon the ocean with the Great Eastern steamship above and mottoes below, appropriately surrounded by an unbroken length of cable with the legend ATLANTIC • TELEGRAPH • CABLE * 1866 * encircling, J.S. & A.B. WYON SC. located beneath the UK motto; Reverse: field of stars with two laurel branches above, TO SIR SAMUEL CANNING inscribed in a frame in the center, the symbol with motto for the city of Liverpool below with ribbon reading DEUS NOBIS HAEC OTIA FECIT, encircled by unbroken length of cable, peripheral legend PRESENTED BY THE AMERICAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE • LIVERPOOL*, J.S. & A.B. WYON SC." located beneath the frame; Edge: plain. Very rare piece as just one of four gold medals awarded in 1867 to the leaders of the Transatlantic telegraph cable project that was laid the year prior. This medal was awarded to Chief Engineer Sir Samuel Canning, whose work over several years led to the successful completion of a lasting Transatlantic cable, bringing communication speeds across the Atlantic from several weeks down to mere minutes. Mint State with excellent golden surfaces bearing ample luster, all details well struck as expected for such a prestigious honor medal, only a few light surface hairlines in the fields, housed in its original Wyon medal case.
