GERMAN STATES, Nürnberg, silver klippe medal, dated 1706, victories in the War of the Spanish Succession and solar eclipse, by G.F. Nürnberger, NGC MS 63, finest and only example in NGC census. Montenuovo-1344; Erlanger-2737; Julius-1172. 40 mm. Obverse with large crowned radiant sunface with three smaller crowns of differing style over rays to left, right, and below, legend MIT GOTT DVRCH / M.O.G. VND L / WIRDS DA VND DOR- / TEN WIEDER HELL., surrounded by double linear and laurel wreath border with rosette at each corner; reverse with solar eclipse at center with BARCELONA LIBERATA A . 1706 . 12 . MAI . ECLIPSIS SOLIS. above, MADRITVM OCCVP . m . MAI. to right, TIRLEMONT . CLADES . m . MAI. below, and BRABANTIA OCCVP. m. MAI. to left, plus a drooping lily with its petals falling off at bottom, surrounded by linear and laurel wreath border with rosettes in each corner. A spectacularly preserved medal commemorating both the martial successes of the Grand Alliance and the total solar eclipse on May 12, 1706, that was seen as a sign of King Louis XIV of France's decline in power. Very lustrous piece with sharply struck details on both sides, rich golden and red toning around parts of the legend, very rare grade for this interesting historical medal. Housed in a large NGC slab.
